Vertie Baker Obituary

Vertie Mae Surles Baker, 98, passed away peacefully at Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital on March 19, 2020. She was born in Sampson County, NC on August 18, 1921 to the late Hassie and Luan Surles.  She was preceded in death by husband, Raymond Baker and siblings, Alice Moore, Daniel Surles, Pearl Surles, Cleatie Henry, Lee Surles and Lucille Separk.  She is a graduate of Erwin HS. and graduated Nursing School in Rocky Mt. N.C. She was well known by many Harnett Co. children for her skill of giving shots at the Dunn Clinic. She was a caring nurse, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. She and her husband were very active members at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Erwin and had a special feeling for this extended church family as evidenced by the many pictures displayed in their home. Vertie also was a proud member of the Erwin Garden Club and volunteer for Meals on Wheels. This past year, she was a resident of The Senior Citizen's Village in Dunn, NC; where she expanded her "family" to include staff and other residents. Vertie had a very vivacious personality and never met a stranger.

She is survived by sons, Ray Baker and wife Mary Ann of Panama City Beach, Florida and Tom Baker and wife Janet of Rock Hill, SC.  Also surviving are grandchildren, Ashley Fox, Michael Baker, Kristen Allred and Kerry Boyd as well as 6 great grandchildren; along with many special in-laws and nieces & nephews, whom she loved like her own children.

Due to current Corona virus scare; a graveside service will be held for immediate family, only, at this time with a memorial service planned for later.
