Elizabeth Mashburn Sutton

Elizabeth, “Lib,” Sutton, age 101, passed away peacefully on August 4th, 2021, at home in High Point, NC.

Lib was born on September 10, 1919, in Johnston County and was the daughter of the late Harvey and Mattie Mashburn. She graduated from East Carolina University, which was known as East Carolina Teachers College at the time. Lib married Troy Lee Sutton on July 4, 1941 and was blessed to be his wife for 36 years before he passed away. Her long career as a teacher began in Johnston County and ended in Guilford County Schools. Several years after retiring from teaching, she began a new career with her daughter, Carolyn, in the tax preparation business.

Her faith was always a central part of her life. She was honored to be a charter member of Unity Presbyterian Church in Newton Grove, NC. When she moved to Greensboro, she joined Buffalo Presbyterian Church where she was a devoted and active member as long as she was able. She was always willing to serve in any capacity needed, including teaching various ages, preparing meals, and serving as president of the Women of Buffalo Presbyterian Church.

To know Lib was to love her and to be loved by her. She was known for her smile and her gentle, kind spirit. Her life was a daily reflection of her Christian beliefs and faith. All who knew her encountered the love and grace of Jesus. Lib enjoyed gardening and blessing others with vegetables and flowers from her garden. She also enjoyed reading, traveling, sharing her homemade bread, and especially loved spending time with family and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Carolyn Burch and sister, Lucy Grey Stack Abernathy.

She is survived by her children, Jim Sutton, Les Sutton (Carole), Beth Craver (Dow); 6 grandchildren, Bob Sutton (Bobbie), Lori Richardson (Gene), Chad Craver (Ashley), Sarah Herrington (Kyle), Matthew Sutton, Daniel Craver (Brittany); 6 great grandchildren, Alyssa Richardson, Kristen Richardson, Thomas Craver, Lily Herrington, Wyatt Herrington, Benjamin Herrington; sister, Frances Johnson; sister-in-law, Kitten Sutton; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved caregiver of 8 years, Ana Sanchez.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Buffalo Presbyterian Church, EPC, in Greensboro, NC. Burial will follow at Unity Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Newton Grove, NC. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday, August 19, 2021, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Buffalo Presbyterian Church.
