Charles Herring Obituary

Charles DeLeon Herring, 81, of Deer Grass Lane, Clinton, N.C. passed away on Feb. 21, 2024 at Brookdale Senior Living in Smithfield, N.C. He is now free from the devastating symptoms of dementia.

Charlie was born April 27, 1942 and grew up in his beloved town of Newton Grove N.C. He was one of 10 children born to David Philemon and Mary Gregory Herring. Two deceased brothers, James Grady and Michael Albert Herring have preceded Charlie in death. Surviving siblings include William Thomas Herring and wife, Magdalene Parker Herring, David Gregory Herring and wife, Jane Hobbs Herring, Gayle Warren, Mary Elizabeth Porter and husband, Nelson Porter, Joanne Askew, Barbara Herring, Gary Herring and wife, Lydia Hobbs Herring and sister-in-law Ann Williams Herring, wife of deceased Albert Herring.

Charles leaves his wife, Patricia Wilson Herring, his son, Charles DeLeon Herring Jr. and wife, Lori Wilson Herring of Newton Grove, N.C. and daughter Heather Herring Godwin and husband, Joe Enoch Godwin of Winchester, Virginia to mourn. His much loved grandkids, Gage Philemon Herring, Brayden DeLeon Herring, Jacqueline Elle Godwin, Jude Enoch Godwin, Juliana Elizabeth Godwin, and Josceline Elise Godwin will certainly feel this loss. He doted on these “grands”.

Charlie attended Our Lady of Guadalupe grade school, Newton Grove School, Hobbton High School, and graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in business finance. He also attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

His career choices were very diversified. He was the third professional hired to establish a community facility of higher education, now known as Sampson Community College. His role was Director of Adult Education. He and wife, Patty, then moved to Annandale, Virginia, where he was employed with a multi CPA/financial organization two blocks from the Capitol building. He later moved back to Newton Grove to continue the accounting business of his ailing uncle, Ambrose Best, in Clinton, N.C.

Also, at this time, the Herring family was expanding Newton Grove Grain and Feed and Charlie had a small herd of swine on Pork Chop Hill.

Charlie always said his life had been a blessing. He loved and respected all people. He followed his parents’ teachings to always show kindness and generosity, and to always speak and acknowledge everyone he met.
