Charles Strickland Obituary

Charles Franklin “Strick” Strickland died Friday, October 15, 2021 in Camden, SC, at the age of 86.  He was born on Sept. 2nd, 1935, in Newton Grove, N.C., and was the son of the late Henry and Minnie Westbrook Strickland. 

Mr. Strickland served in the U.S Air Force after graduating high school.  He went on to spend his career as the owner of retail and wholesale tire businesses in Camden, SC & St. Matthews, SC.  Affectionately known as “Strick”, he was well regarded as a businessman and also for his larger than life personality.  In addition to a lifelong love of golfing and fishing, he was a Mason and a Shriner.

Mr. Strickland is survived by two daughters, Susie Branham (Burt) of Lugoff, S.C. and Jeannie Cooley (Rob) of Wilmington, N.C., one stepson, Bob Williams (Sarah) of Camden, one stepdaughter, Dee Dee Williams of Columbia, SC. He is survived by a brother Dewey Strickland, sister Mary Lee S. (JC) Hayes and sister Elease S. (Jimmy) Raines. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, as well as grandsons Grayson Bethel, Charles Eustace, John Eustace, Luke Williams and granddaughters Sarah Crouch and Leigh Williams. Great-grandchildren are Loki Crouch, Kason Hicks, Bryan Hicks, and Bailee Hicks, Xadia Williams and Joseph Reed. 

In addition to his parents, Mr. Strickland was predeceased by brother Henry Strickland, sisters Catherine S. Smith, Ellen S. Underwood, Ruby S. Waters and Agnes S. Deans, and also granddaughter Lauren A. Hicks.

A funeral service was held at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff, SC on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.  A graveside service and burial will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Newton Grove, NC, at 2:00p.m. on October 26, 2021. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. at West & Dunn Funeral Home. 

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Colonial of Old Camden for the care Mr. Strickland received there; in particular, Alicia Owens and Victor Wimark.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to donate to the charity of your choice, the Alzheimer’s Foundation or the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
