Carroll Douglas Underwood, 91, of Newton Grove, NC, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2018. Carroll was born in Newton Grove, NC on April 5, 1926 to the late Bernard M. Underwood and the late Ada Royal Underwood.
Carroll entered the Navy in January 1944 and served during WW II. His ship, LST-667, was part of the invasion force in the Pacific. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asian-Pacific Campaign medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Philippines Presidential Unit Citation and the Philippines Liberation Medal.
Carroll worked for the Bell Telephone Company for 24 years in Maryland before moving to Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania. There he was the proprietor of the Greystone Inn and a real estate agency. In 1976 he and his wife, Barbara decided to move to warmer weather and returned to Newton Grove, NC.
Carroll was active in the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was active as well in Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Catholic church his great-grandfather built in 1874.
Carroll is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Wilkerson Underwood, his son Kelly Fritz Underwood, brothers Bernard M. Underwood Jr., William Thomas Underwood, Henry Morris Underwood and sister Frances Anne Underwood Franzak. Carroll is survived by 8 nephews and 6 nieces, many great nieces and nephews, and many close friends.
