Walton Sherrol Keen of Newton Grove went to be with the Lord Saturday April 9th, 2022.
Born January 14, 1930, Sherrol was the son of the late Walton Raymond Keen and Irene Jordan Keen of Newton Grove. Sherrol served 4 years in the United States Air Force after graduating from Westbrook High School. He attended East Carolina University where he obtained his Class-A High School Teachers Certificate in Industrial Arts in 1956, which he taught at Erwin High School for 13 years. Many of his students returned to thank him for teaching them electricity because they secured good paying jobs with companies like Stackhouse. He returned to ECU to obtain a Master of Art in 1960. He then dedicated his life as educator at Midway Elementary for 22 years.
Sherrol enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in the yard, wood working and was a true handyman. He loved taking his family to church every Sunday and on vacation to Myrtle Beach during the summer. He was a Master Mason with the Mill Creek No 125 Grand Lodge for 60 years with his dear friend J. B Henderson.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 62 years; Janice Blackman Keen; daughter: Rhonda Fields and husband Odean, daughter; Diane Williford and husband Jeffrey, son; David S. Keen and wife Shelley; six grandchildren: Hillary Wooten, Alex Wooten, Derek Williford, Andrew Williford, Rachel Keen, and Audrey Keen; three great grandchildren: Cole, Logan and Grace Williford; Sisters: Janis K. Todd, Sandra K. Boyette and husband Billy J. Boyette; and Brother: Theron C. Keen.
He was preceded by Walton Raymond Keen, Irene Jordan Keen, Edison Raymond Keen, and Lee Keen Sexton.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at Hopewell United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive family and friends 1 hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Gregg Presnal will officiate. He will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
Mr. Keen will lie in state at West & Dunn Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 12th from 11:00 a.m. till 4:30 p.m.
