Walter R. Cotton, 79, of Newton Grove, NC passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2022.
Walter was the only surviving child born June 9th, 1943 to William ‘Monk’ Cotton and Mary Daniel Cotton Hinson.
Walter served in the US Army for his country faithfully for 27 years. From the shores of Vietnam to tours in Germany ending his career proudly with the 82nd Airborne at Ft Bragg, NC. Upon his retirement Walter was not a man to stay still; he enjoyed many careers from the deep log woods of NC to his love of vehicles delivering parts for MHC. Though serving his country was a great love, his greatest accomplishment was marrying the love of his life Stella Blackman and welcoming their three extraordinary daughters. In his later years, he enjoyed the company and entertainment of his grandchildren, great-grands, and fur-babies.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his loving wife of 47 years, Stella Blackman Cotton and Gordan S. Hinson (step-up dad).
He is survived by his three daughters: Malinda C. Knight (Woody); Deborah C. Giddens (Allen); Barbara J. Cotton, all of Newton Grove; grandchildren: Brittany P. Knoll (Ben); Nicholas Johnson; Lauren G. Tanner (Jonathan); Heather S. Prenda (Matt); Dustin A. Giddens; Bethany A. Knight (Jay); Daniel Knight (Courtney); fourteen beautiful great-grandchildren and five pups.
Walter’s funeral service will be held Sunday, January 1st, 2023 at West & Dunn beginning at 3:00 PM. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the funeral service from 2:00 PM till 3:00 PM other times at the home of his daughter Barbara. Officiating will be Walter Gaskins and Chris Leak. He will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Cemetery, Newton Grove, NC.
