Stephen "Steve" Carr Obituary

Stephen “Steve” Thomas Carr, 68, of Four oaks, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, surrounded by his family.  He was born September 22, 1953, in Grove City, PA to the late Ernest and Dorothy Carr.

A visitation will be held Saturday, August 13th at the West and Dunn Funeral Home in Benson from 5:00-7:00 pm.  A funeral service will be held Sunday, August 14th at 2:00 pm at Hopewell OFWB Church with Roger Hill officiating.

Steve graduated from Mohawk High School in 1973 and went to work at Youngstown Sheet and Tube as a steel mill worker.  When the mill closed he moved his family to N.C.  He went to work as a correctional officer with the Women’s Prison in Raleigh where he found his love for Locksmithing.  Steve then went on to become the Head Locksmith for Johnston County Schools, where he took pride in ensuring that all the schools in the county were safe, and was always willing to help.  He retired there in 2014.  Steve also owned and operated Carr’s Locksmith Shop for over 20 years.

Steve was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.  He worked hard to provide for his family and taught his children to work hard, do things right the first time, never take life for granted, and help people whenever you can.  Steve was very involved in his children’s lives, never missing a game or social event, and was very proud when they both became teachers.  He was Pap-Pap to Thomas and Zachary and enjoyed spending time with them and teaching them how to drive.  He was Pa-Po to Madison, Cooper, and Hallie where he loved spending time with them, playing outdoors in the sandbox, and sharing his tic tacs.  His family was his pride and joy.

Steve is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gale Carr; his daughter, Lisa Carr of Benson; son, Sean, and wife Heather Carr of Four Oaks; and grandchildren, Thomas, Zachary, Madison, Cooper, and Hallie who will miss him dearly.  Brothers Dave (Carolyn) Carr of Harrisville, PA; Bill (Amy) Carr of New Castle, PA; sisters Sherry (Ron) Vincent of Ocala, FL; Lois (Jim) Vannan of Willow Springs, NC; Gloria Natale of New Castle, PA; Debbie (Jim) Fusco of Edinburg, PA; sister-in-laws Linda Carr of Slippery Rock, PA, Barb (Jeff) Quinto of Rolesville, NC; Daisie (Mark) Pontius of New Castle, PA; June (Jude) Tuliszewski of Tampa, FL; and brother-in-law John Romonsky of New Castle, PA; mother-in-law Betty Bash of New Castle, PA; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Dorothy Carr of Edinburgh, PA; brothers Richard Carr and Louis Carr both from Slippery Rock, PA; a sister Joyce Perell of Clayton, NC; sister-in-law Wanda Romonsky of New Castle, PA; and father-in-law Claire Boyle of New Castle, PA.
