Shirley Bethea Pate

Shirley B. Pate, 87, formerly of Erwin, NC passed away peacefully with her family by her side on September 4, 2022, at the Embrace Hospice House at Myrtle Beach, SC. She had been a resident of Myrtle Beach Manor Assisted Living for five years after leaving Erwin to be near her son and daughter-in-law. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 11, 2022, at West and Dunn Funeral Home of Erwin from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2022, at West and Dunn Funeral Home Chapel in Erwin beginning at 3:00 pm. Interment to follow at Erwin Memorial Park of Erwin. 

Shirley graduated from Erwin High School in 1953 and lived most of her life in Erwin. Together with her husband, they operated the Erwin Restaurant in downtown Erwin for many years in the 1960s. Shirley worked briefly in the cafeteria at Wayne Avenue School in Dunn until she retired. Shirley enjoyed going on cruises with her family and friends, going to dances, and shopping. She always looked forward to the annual Whitman Family Christmas parties. She was often seen at the local Wendys or Mcdonald's sitting and chatting with friends. Anyone who knew Shirley knew she was always dressed up. She will always be remembered as a classy lady who never met a stranger. 

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Inis Nordan, and her husband, Glynn who she was married to for 43 years before his passing in 1996. Shirley is survived by her only son, Barry, and his wife, Judy of Myrtle Beach, SC. Three grandsons, Bradley Pate of Benson, NC, Brian Pate and wife Cooper of Alexandria, VA., and Britt Pate and wife Ashtan of Four Oaks, NC, and one great-grandson, Evan Pate.
