Sharon Murray Horne, 81, of Dunn, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the SECU Hospice House of Smithfield.
Born on July 5, 1944, in Cumberland County, Sharon was the daughter of the late Paul Davis Murray and Violet Ruth Johnson Murray. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, Scott Murray Horne.
Sharon lived a life defined by faith, love, and an extraordinary gift for making people feel welcome. She never met a stranger and truly loved people. Her heart was always open, her smile always ready, and her home a gathering place for friends and family.
A devoted wife of 60 years to Kelly Horne, Sharon found her greatest joy in her family. She is also survived by her daughter, Carla Barefoot (Wesley) of Dunn; grandsons, Matthew Barefoot (Lauren) and Cameron Barefoot, both of Dunn; her cherished great-granddaughter, Madeline Barefoot; and another precious great-grandbaby on the way. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters, Carolyn Hicks of Garner and Paulette Johnson of Oak Island; and her sister-in-law, Susan Davis of Gibsonville. She is also survived and loved by several nieces and nephews.
Sharon was very active in her church and deeply committed to her faith. She loved gathering with her card groups, especially to play Hand and Foot, and treasured the friendships formed around those tables.
In her younger years, Sharon was an accomplished athlete and an All-State All-Star basketball player. Her love for sports continued throughout her life. For 25 years, her greatest enjoyment was watching her grandchildren play ball. She was their biggest fan in the stands, always encouraging, always proud. Even if they struck out, she made sure they knew they had played a great game.
Sharon also enjoyed traveling and took trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and out West. She especially loved visiting Disney World, where her joyful spirit fit right in. At home, she was affectionately known as “the tomato lady,” always making sure neighbors had tomatoes — just one more reflection of her generous and caring heart.
Sharon’s life was a testimony of kindness, encouragement, and unwavering love for others. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
The family will be receiving friends at Erwin Methodist Church on Monday, February 16, 2026 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, a Memorial Service to immediately follow at 3:00 PM.
She will be laid to rest at Erwin Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Scott Murray Horne Memorial Fund (donations may be sent to Erwin Methodist Church, 600 Denim Drive, Erwin, NC 28339).
