Richard Topper Obituary

Richard Curtis Topper, age 90 of Roseboro, passed away Monday, July 22, 2024 at his home.  Mr. Topper was born in Emmitsburg, MD on September 13, 1933 and was the son of the late Curtis and Anna Topper.  He was the husband of Alice Topper who died on November 23, 2017.

Richard was a carpenter for the John H. Hampshire Company of Baltimore, MD and retired in 1989.  After retirement, he enjoyed traveling. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army.  He was a member of the American Legion, Francis V. Elder Post 121 in Emmitsburg, MD where he served as a Past Commander.

Mr. Topper was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Topper, one son Christopher Topper, and one daughter, Patricia Mathews.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include nine brothers and sisters: Delores Rodgers of Westminster, MD, Joan Tracey of Emmitsburg, MD,  Anthony D. Topper of Littlestown, PA, Michael J. Topper of Hagerstown, MD, Patrick A. Topper of Taneytown, MD, Joseph E. Topper of Hampstead, MD, Stephen E. Topper of Lancaster, PA, Douglas J. Topper of Thurmont, MD and Susan A. Simmons of Midway, NC.

Also surviving are six children: Barbara Ditmore of Roseboro, NC, Wayne Topper and Marianne Federline both of Hagerstown, MD, Victoria Hansford of Roseboro, NC, Brian Topper of Palm Springs, CA and Charles Topper of Westminster, MD;   Seventeen grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren. Grandson, Scott Coyle, was especially close to his grandfather and lovingly cared for him the last seven months as he declined. Richard will be dearly missed by all.

There will be a family rosary on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 10:15 am.  A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 27th, 2024 at 11:00 am at the St. Josephs Catholic Church Parish Hall in Emmitsburg, MD.  Following the mass, interment will be at the St. Josephs Cemetery in Emmitsburg, MD with a luncheon immediately after.
