Melba Elizabeth Hardin Byrd, age 79, of Erwin died Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at her residence.
Mrs. Byrd was born in Harnett County on May 25, 1945 to Reverend D.A. and Minnie Hardin. Putting herself through school, Melba earned a business degree from Campbell College and then achieved a Masters degree in Special Needs Education from Fayetteville State University. She was a gifted teacher with a special love for exceptional children and retired after working in education in Harnett County for 40 years.
Melba is survived by her, husband, Donald Byrd; daughter, Delia McMillan; grandson, Joshua McMillan and wife, Ashley; great grandsons, Gunner and Rhett McMillan; and many nieces and nephews all who she adored dearly.
Since her father was a preacher, Melba was raised in church and in younger years would often accompany her dad when he visited the senior citizen’s facilities and she would play the piano. Her faith was very important to her and she remained active in church throughout her life.
Mrs. Byrd enjoyed spending time with her family and husband of 55 years. She also enjoyed the beach, admiring the beautiful flowers her daughter grew, and spoiling her grandson’s retired hunting dogs, Stoger and Indie which quickly became her pets. Melba will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
The family will receive friends at the Dunn Funeral Home in Erwin on Sunday, November 10, 2024 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. The funeral, officiated by Mr. Kenneth Byrd, will follow at 3:00 pm at the Dunn Funeral Home Chapel at 904 Lucas Street in Erwin, NC. Burial will be immediately after at Devotional Gardens Cemetery in Dunn, NC.
