Mr. Max Gerald McCullen, 88, of Newton Grove passed away peacefully Friday, at his home. He was born June 14, 1933 in Newton Grove, the son of Ennis and Lillie Mae McCullen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Jewel McCullen and son, Terry McCullen.
Max was a lifelong farmer and land owner, tending land throughout Sampson, Wayne and Johnston Counties, tending multiple crops including cotton, tobacco, corn, wheat, soybeans and produce. Max also owned a trucking company during his earlier years. For the past 3 years, Max independently hauled grains and fertilizers out of the port of Wilmington. Max worked every day of his life in an occupation he adored. Overall, Max was a healthy man and worked up until he became ill.
Max is survived by two daughters, Connie Thornton of Newton Grove, Beth (Ernie ) Byrd of Bunnlevel; Grandchildren, Ashley (Russell) McCullen Holland, Robert Thornton, Tara (Kane) Whitted, and Logan Byrd; great grandchildren; James and Joseph Wilson, and Vanna Whitted.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 2021 at Pleasant Union Christian Church, prior to the service, beginning at 2:00 p.m., visitation will occur. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery.
