Mary Elizabeth Monk, 91, of Pikeville, NC (formally of Newton Grove, NC), passed away at
home surrounded by her loved ones early Saturday morning on June 24, 2023.
Mary was born on April 27 in 1932 to Olive Leona and Elmer Thomas Buck in Milton PA.
In 1952, she met George Bernard Monk of Newton Grove in Milton, PA. They were married in
January of 1953 and then moved to Newton Grove to live on the family farm and went on to
have six children: Mary, John, George, Archie, Lawrence, and Elizabeth.
Mary dedicated her life to her family. She worked on the family farm and supported her family
through many challenging life events. She always wanted to help others.
She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton Grove. She loved
Jesus and her church. Mary was passionate about working in the garden, preserving food, and loving her pets. When
she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found watching western
movies. Her family and friends will miss her greatly!
She is survived by 4 children: Mary Benton, John Monk, George Monk (Kim) and Elizabeth
Bass. She also has 12 Grandchildren: Scottie Tadlock (Toni), Stevie Tadlock (Michelle), Karen
Thompson (David), Kim Westbrook (Jason), Chad Monk, Travis Monk (Elana), Jimmie Rice
(Elizabeth), Jessica Monk, Erica Cribbs (Shawn), Katie Pate (Jonathan), Wayne Benton (Cindy),
Vickie Lancaster (Eric), 29 Great Grandchildren, and 6 Great-Great Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband George Bernard Monk, sons Lawrence Monk and Archie
Monk, son in law Shelton Benton, daughter in law Denise Monk Grandsons Lawrence Monk jr
and Cory Rice, and Great Granddaughter Destiny Thompson
A visitation will be held Monday, June 26 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at West & Dunn Funeral
Home of Newton Grove. Funeral Service will be at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in
Newton Grove on Tuesday, June 27 at 3:00PM. The burial will follow in the church cemetery.
