Mr. Marion Lewis Taylor, age 78, of Erwin, NC passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at Central Harnett Hospital after an illness. "Mackie" as he was known to all, was born in Carteret County, NC on May 24th, 1945 but moved to Erwin, NC where he spent most of his life. He is preceded in death by his father, Malcolm Lewis Taylor and his mother, Gertrude Holmes.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Barbara Taylor Strickland, and Carol J. Smith and neice, Marie Poston of Erwin; other family members and friends including special family friend, James "Tony" Godwin who was like a brother, and his wife, Pam.
Mr. Taylor graduated from Erwin High School in 1963 and was a member of the Erwin Good Fellas Club, a group with men who graduated from Erwin School and meet on the last Wednesday of each month at the Erwin Gym for food, fellowship, good fun and to reminisce of the "good ole days". After high school, Mackie joined the Navy on the "buddy plan" with a good friend. He served for four years and his position was a helmsman to help steer the ship. After serving in the Navy, he returned to the Erwin area and worked as a medical assistant at Dorothea Dix hospital and then as a sales representative for Warren's Cricket Farm selling across the region to bait disbributors.
Mr. Taylor loved all sports but was a real golf fanatic and played whenever he was able. He was an avid Carolina Tarheels sports fan. He also loved the beach, beach music, and shag dancing. His favorite beach music song was "Miss Grace". He enjoyed watching the old westerns on TV and Mackie never missed the chance for a cold beer and an extremely rare sirloin steak with friends.
