Johnny R. Ammons, Sr., age 70 of Linden, a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to so many, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 18, 2025, leaving behind a life that was as full of memories and laughter as it was of love.
Johnny was the kind of man you always knew was around. His voice carried across a room, and his sayings—some wise, some downright funny—will be repeated for years to come. He loved the simple things in life: pier fishing all night, the satisfaction of a freshly cut yard, and the loyal company of his dogs. And if something was broken, you could count on Johnny to fix it, because in his eyes “he was the man.” He never met a card table he didn’t like, and whether it was poker night with friends or a good gamble just for fun, Johnny always played with the same mix of luck, laughter, and charm that made him unforgettable.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Ammons; his father, James “Toot” Ammons; and his brother, James Ammons.
Johnny is survived by his devoted wife, Debbie Ammons; his son, John Jr. and daughter in law, Breanna Ammons of Chesapeake, Virginia; and his beloved grandchildren: Alyssa, Charlotte, John III, and Maesie Ammons, who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by his siblings: Rebecca Bowden (husband Wayne), Stoney Ammons (wife Vickie), Kenneth Ammons Sr., Louann Hair (husband Gurney), all of Linden, NC; and Terry Ammons (wife Brenda) of Cedars Creek, NC. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who cherished their uncle Johnny, his stories, and the laughter he always brought with him.
Johnny will be remembered as a man who loved loudly, laughed often, and lived fully. His voice, his sayings, and his unshakable presence will echo in the hearts of everyone who knew him. More than anything, he knew when to hold ’em, knew when to fold ’em—and he always knew how to play the hand he was dealt.
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025 at Dunn Funeral Home, 904 Lucas Street, Erwin, NC 28339. Friends and family will be received beginning at 2:00 p.m., with the service starting at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Colliers Chapel Church Cemetery, 9377 Colliers Chapel Road, Linden, NC 28356.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Shriners Children’s, whose mission of care and compassion reflects Johnny’s own spirit. Donations may be made online at: www.shrinerschildrens.org/en/ways-to-give/donate.
