A Life in Full Bloom: Celebrating John Milton Lee

August 20, 1956 – April 23, 2026

John Milton Lee didn’t just walk through the gates of Heaven on April 23; he likely did it with a laid-back stride, a legendary smile, and that one-of-a-kind accent that told you exactly who he was and where he came from. He was a man who lived with intention, finding beauty in the thing’s others might overlook.

His journey took him through Four Oaks Elementary and South Johnston High, eventually leading him to Wake Tech and Campbell College, where he earned his Bachelor’s in Law Enforcement. Never one to stop growing, he later mastered his craft through the AOMP school while serving with the Raleigh Police Department.

From the Farm to the Force

John’s story began on August 20, 1956, rooted in the soil of his family’s farm in Bentonville, North Carolina. Those early years instilled in him a "down-to-earth" nature that defined his thirty-year career with the Raleigh Police Department which began in 1977.

From his early days as a police officer to his retirement as a Captain, John was known as a "standup guy" and a "fine man." He led with a rare blend of grit and composure, remembered by his colleagues as a mentor who listened more than he spoke and a leader who remained "just a fun, cool dude" regardless of the rank on his shoulder. He served his community with compassion and strength.

Outside of the precinct, John was a seeker of stories. Whether he was scouring auctions for antiques, wandering through flea markets, or taking a road trip "just because," he was always on the hunt for what he called "rare finds." He taught his children to look closer—to find the unique value in the world that others might miss.

His adventurous spirit famously led him to rent a jeep in Hawaii and navigate the winding Road to Hana, circling the entire island of Maui just to see what was around the next bend. At home, he was the master of the "low and slow," finding absolute joy in a whole-day BBQ, perfecting a brisket, or tending to a whole hog. If you wanted the best recipe, you went to John.

A Heart Centered on Family

While his career was filled with accolades, John’s true rewards were found at home. His three children—Jonathan (Stacey), Bryan (Kimberly), and Megan (Justin)—were the heartbeat of his life. He watched with immense pride as his family grew to include seven grandchildren: Vera, Delaney, Mazie, Samuel (Huck), Ada, Lillian, and Anna. To them, he was simply "Dad", “Grandpa at the Farm” or "Grandpa"—authentically himself, regardless of the occasion. To his kids, Dad was famously "riddle-based." Whether you were asking for advice or wondering if you were finally old enough to do something, you usually didn't get a "yes" or "no"—you got the "3X7 rule" or a puzzle to solve.

In a beautiful testament to his character, John maintained a deep and lasting bond with Karen. Though their paths as a married couple changed, she remained his soulmate and a source of constant comfort. Together, they remained a united front, working hand-in-hand to care for their children and the family they built together.

John was intentional with everything he gave—whether it was a spoken word of wisdom or an unspoken gesture of support. He was "authentically John" until the very end, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, a love for the hunt, and a reminder to always appreciate the "rare finds" in life.  His infectious SMILE will last forever.
