Imogene (Clifton) Baggett

April 28, 1931 ~ November 14, 2021 (age 90)


Mrs. Imogene “Gene” Clifton Baggett, 90, of Newton Grove, North Carolina, died November 14, 2021, after a brief illness. She had been a resident of Rolling Ridge Assisted Living in Newton Grove since January of 2017.

She is survived by four children; Glenn Alphonsus Baggett (wife Jennifer), of Newton Grove, NC; Regina Star Baggett Schulz (husband Bob), of Celestine, IN; Bernard Clifton Baggett (wife Susan), of Dubois, IN; and Selina Baggett Shue (husband Grady), of Hickory, NC; and one brother, John Clifton, of Virginia. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren, and five step great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband, William Eli Baggett; son, Christopher Eli Baggett; daughter, Mona Roslyn Baggett; mother, Edna (Highsmith) Clifton Oates Newton; father, Bernice Clayton Clifton; sister, Sarah Rogers; brothers Francis Clifton and Gerald Clifton; and stepbrother, Bryant Clifton.

Imogene was raised on a farm in Giddensville, North Carolina, and married Eli Baggett in 1948. Early in their marriage, Eli’s work took them to live in Washington, D.C. and Aransas Pass, Texas, but they eventually settled back in Newton Grove to work the family farm and raise their family. In the 1970’s, they opened The Old Mill Stream Restaurant, which was a local favorite. After 60 years of marriage, Imogene lost her husband Eli in 2008.

Imogene had many hobbies, but she especially enjoyed reading, puzzles, sudoku and oil painting. She created many paintings for her family and friends. She was also a member of the Tea Party Ladies, the local chapter of the Red Hat Society.

A Rosary Service will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, beginning at 11:30 am, followed by a visitation at 12:00 pm and Mass beginning at 1:00 pm all at Guadalupe Catholic Church of Newton Grove, NC. Interment to follow at Guadalupe Catholic Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in memory of Imogene Baggett can be made to the SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill. The SECU Family House is a nonprofit facility providing meals and affordable housing for UNC Hospital patients and their loved ones.
