Gladys (McCullen) Bass

Gladys McCullen Bass, 93, of Spivey’s Corner, NC transitioned into eternal rest on Sunday, September 26, 2021.  Gladys was born on September 20, 1928 to the late Charlie Turner McCullen and Lillie Straugh McCullen. 

A graveside service will be held at Shady Grove OFWB Church cemetery, 7605 Newton Grove Hwy., Dunn, NC on Saturday, October 2 at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Chris Hall officiating.  Family will receive visitors on Friday, October 1 from 6 to 7:30  p.m at West & Dunn Funeral Home, Newton Grove, NC. Attendees are asked to wear masks.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Ralph Shelton Bass, brothers Charlie T. McCullen, Jr., Manley McCullen; sisters, Margaret M. Butler and Mildred M. Daughtry.

Surviving are her children, Terry Bass (Marsha), Charlene Bass and sister, Carol M. Bethune, sisters-in-law Sybil B. West and Georgia Bass.  Grandchildren are Anna B. Lewis (Machen), Elliott Bass, McKenzie Bass, Jacob Smith and Zachary Smith and great grandsons Maxton and Watson Lewis.  Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Gladys was a member of Shady Grove OFWB Church and sang in the choir for many years.  She assisted in Vacation Bible School and was an excellent seamstress designing and constructing garments for church plays. The holidays were one of her favorite times, always decorating her home and cooking for her family which brought her great joy. Also, she loved to work in her yard and her escape was cutting grass on her John Deere lawn mower.
