Evelyn Tart Galleo, 88, died peacefully at her home on October 2, 2025.
Mrs. Galleo was born in southern Johnston County near Newton Grove, NC, on December 16, 1936, the eighth child of thirteen born to Elijah Preston and Rovene Jones Tart. Along with her brothers and sisters, she helped her parents farm the family land of many generations.
She married Thomas Galleo in 1960 after having met at Pope Air Force Base where he was stationed. After Mr. Galleo’s time in the service, which included a four-year assignment in Wiesbaden, Germany, they settled in Chapel Hill, NC, where they raised their three children.
A devout Catholic, Mrs. Galleo was particularly devoted to the Tridentine Latin Mass which she attended all her life. She loved the outdoors and was happiest when working in her yard. Family reunions centered around the entertaining and unending stories of her and her siblings’ childhood on the farm, stories which the extended Tart family continue to tell.
She is preceded in death by all her siblings except two sisters, Carmel and Jeanette. She is survived by her children, David (Andrea) Galleo, Susan Galleo, and Michael (Nancy) Galleo.
A viewing for Mrs. Galleo will be held from 6 to 8 pm Sunday, October 5, 2025, at Dunn Funeral Home in Newton Grove, NC.
A funeral Mass will be said Monday, October 6, 2025, at 9 am at Old St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Goldsboro, NC. The burial service will follow at 11 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton Grove, NC.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
