David Earl Gainey, 63, of Benson, NC, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on December 31, 2025. He was born on December 16, 1962, and was preceded in death by his parents, Janet Pleasant Gainey and Robert Earl Gainey; his brother, Doug Gainey; his sister, Cathy Gainey; and his granddaughter, Aurora Jacobs.
He is survived by his wife, Shannon Gainey; daughters, Paula Michelle Edwards (Brandon) and Brandy Gainey (Thomas); sons, Chris Gainey (Liz), Bradley Boyette (Michell), and Sef Stanley; and grandchildren, Ava Edwards, Logan Gainey, Leo Jacobs, Taylor Trader-Tino, and Riley Trader-Tino.
David Earl Gainey also known as “Ghost Train” to his trucking family, was an over-the-road trucker for 42 years. Through decades spent on the road, he worked tirelessly to provide for his family and built friendships in every state, never knowing a stranger.
David loved Jesus and his family deeply. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, karaoke, and playing his guitar—especially bluegrass music, which he fondly referred to as “pickin’ and grinnin’.” He had a gift for conversation, could talk to anyone about anything, and never missed an opportunity to help someone in need.
David always had a lot to say, loved really big, and lived life out loud. His kindness, generosity, and larger-than-life personality will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Dunn Funeral Home of Benson.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at 3HC Home Care and Hospice for their compassion, care, and support during this difficult time.
