Betty Lou Byrd Wood, age 88, of Erwin passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at her home.
Mrs. Wood was a homemaker and bookkeeper for her husband‘s contracting business. Born on June 18, 1936 in Harnett County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Bryant Byrd, Sr. and Betty McLamb Byrd of Erwin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvis Glenn Wood, and son Marvin Glenn Wood. Also brothers, Herbert Carroll Byrd, Lewis Edward Byrd and Herbert Bryant Byrd Jr.
She is survived by her sons, Gary W. Wood of Erwin, Steven A. Wood and wife Abbie of Dunn; daughters, Veronica Wood Johnson and husband David of Erwin, and Jennifer Wood Lewis of Erwin.
Eight grandchildren Stephen Holland and wife, Holly, of Erwin, Candise Wood Cowan and husband, Tim Jr of Erwin, Stephanie Wood Honeycutt and husband, Tyler, of Salemburg, Alvis “Bryant” Wood and wife, Casey, of Godwin, Jorge Johnson, of Erwin, Reyna Johnson Geiger and husband, Jeremiah of Fayetteville, Lorna Lewis West and husband Jonathan of Cranberry Township, PA, and Alexis Lewis of Erwin. Fifteen great-grandchildren; Goddaughter Crystal Thornton Illar and husband, Jarod, of North Huntington, PA and their three children; Many nieces and nephews. Also Sssters, Revonda Byrd Tart of North Huntington, PA, and Vicky Glover of Coats, and sister-in-law, Margaret Byrd of Dunn, NC.
Mrs. Wood was a faithful member of the Erwin Church of God all of her life and at the time of her passing, she was the longest living attendee. Her family in attendance had reached five generations.
Betty enjoyed spending time with her grandbabies. She also loved cooking and baking and was famous for her pecan pies and “Granny sauce”.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at 2:00 pm at the Erwin Church of God, and other times at the home. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm at the church with Revs. Tim Cowan, Jr and Robert Worthington. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Erwin Memorial Park Cemetery.
