Glenda Lee Obituary

Glenda (Sue) Flowers Lee of Four Oaks, NC, passed away on November 3, 2019 at the age of 78 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.  Sue was born on March 13, 1941, at home in Johnston County to Harvey and Thelma Flowers.  She was the oldest of three children.  They all worked on the farm.  She was the valedictorian of Meadow High School in 1959.  She told people that she studied hard so she wouldn’t have to work so hard in the field.  She graduated from East Carolina University to become a teacher in only 3 years. She married Darry B Lee,Jr.(Junior) in 1961.

Sue taught at Benson for 1 year and then at Four Oaks until 1969.  She then taught at South Johnston High School from it's opening in 1969 until retirement in 1996.  She taught thousands of students English and Journalism over the years and always enjoyed seeing them and hearing about their lives.  In addition to teaching she helped run the family machine and welding shop where she remained active until her illness.  Sue was a life long member of Banner Chapel Advent Christian Church in Benson and loved her Church family.  In retirement Junior and Sue enjoyed their tractor club and showing tractors. Sue always maintained such a positive and joyous attitude towards life. She loved her family and friends and her home became the focal point for the larger family.  Lots of food, laughter, love, and good advice was freely given around her small kitchen table.

Sue is survived by her two sons and their families: Van and Tammy Lee of Four Oaks, NC and Todd and Kris Lee of Forest, VA.  She had 5 grandchildren: James and wife Ashlee, Patrick and wife Brittany, Sarah of NC; Riley, and Claire Lee of VA; and nephews Chad Flowers, Ryan Flowers and wife Sherry, Brian Jackson and wife Gina, Greg Jackson and wife Maria.

Sue was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband, and a brother, Larry Flowers.  She is survived by her brother Glenn and his wife Sue Flowers, sister-in-law Linda Flowers, and brother and sister-in-laws Horace and Shirley Lee, and Helen and Jack Reed.
